Objectives/Challenges

The global health crisis abruptly paused in-person media tours, which were a key requirement for our clients' media campaigns. Ultimately, our goal at JConnelly was to overcome two fundamental challenges created by our new circumstances: how we were going to keep the public informed and our clients connected to the media.

Solution

To ensure that our clients continued to experience the media momentum a typical year would have entailed, the JConnelly team developed a series of ongoing virtual media roundtables, which have eliminated travel costs and have created a new way for reporters to connect with our clients. Each panel features several clients discussing relevant industry topics themed around their expertise, as well as what’s trending in the news. Reporters can see the panelists, ask questions and source their stories.

JConnelly hosted the first roundtable in March 2020. It featured panelists from DoubleLine Capital, Federated Hermes, Envestnet and Creative Planning. Approximately 12 reporters were in attendance from top media, including CNBC.com, Forbes, Wall Street Journal and ThinkAdvisor to discuss the market repercussions of Covid-19.

The team coordinated a second roundtable a few days later. It focused on the implications of the current market disruption on the wealth management industry. We secured panelists of industry leaders, which included Hightower, Robertson Stephens and Thrivent Advisor Network and MarketCounsel’s founder, Brian Hamburger as the moderator. Reporters from Barron’s, Financial Advisor, Citywire USA and Fund Intelligence were among the media in attendance.

Due to the success of the first two panels, our strategy turned into an ongoing series and focused on a slew of timely financial and business topics. We have since expanded the roundtables into additional industries, featuring a diverse range of experts in food and beverage, as well as individual virtual panels for specific client initiatives, launches and/or announcements, using the platform as an alternative to a virtual press conference.

Results

A collaborative process among the entire PR team, the monthly media roundtables continue to be successful to this day, generating an increased amount of press for our clients during the pandemic, while strengthening our client and media relationships. In fact, reporters in national media came to rely on the virtual media roundtables to drive their own editorial calendars. Over the past year and a half, we’ve hosted more than 25 roundtables, which have resulted in coverage in top national, business and industry trade publications, including Forbes, CNBC, Think Advisor, InvestmentNews, WealthManagement.com, USA Today and Barron’s, and a total readership of more than 700 million views.
